The UK government has introduced the Product Regulation and Metrology Bill, aimed at enhancing product safety laws and ensuring that all goods sold in the UK meet strict regulatory requirements. First brought before the House of Lords on 4 September 2024, the bill remains under review and must still pass through the House of Commons before it becomes law.
The proposed legislation grants new powers to establish product safety regulations, ensuring that goods meet health, safety, environmental, and energy efficiency standards. Additionally, it introduces stricter requirements for measuring instruments, such as weighing devices, to improve accuracy and reliability.
Some products, including medicines, medical devices, food, and animal feed, are exempt from these regulations.
One of the most important aspects of the bill is the requirement for certain businesses to appoint an Authorised Representative. This applies mainly to companies outside the UK that sell products in the country. The Authorised Representative, who must be located within the UK, will be responsible for ensuring product compliance, maintaining technical documentation, and serving as a point of contact for UK regulatory authorities.
Companies that fail to meet these obligations could face regulatory action, including inspections and financial penalties.
As the bill continues its review in the House of Lords, businesses should take proactive steps to ensure compliance before the new rules are enforced.
