Liz Truss, the newly elected Prime Minister of the UK vowed to light a bonfire of EU red tape in order to remove the remaining EU laws automatically transferred to British law following Brexit, from the British statute book. The announcement was similar to one made by the former Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, earlier in 2022.
By removing the laws and cutting business taxes, Truss believes businesses will be encouraged to invest in the UK, which will help to boost struggling UK economic growth following Brexit and the COVID Pandemic.
Some critics fear that the move may cause further trade barriers and increase friction for businesses exporting from the UK to the EU as goods entering Europe may become subject to more to ensure they meet EU standards.
